map" of sustainability relating to their activities, products and services. . Product includes the design aspects and input material man- agement to create the product. . Process includes all manufacturing steps (e.g. prepress, press and postpress) involved with converting raw materials into a finished product including process by-products (e.g. solid wastes, air pollution and wastewater) that have an environ- mental, health and safety impact. . Envelope includes all the manufacturing support activities and includes the building, grounds, utilities, employees, and other functions at an individual site. Any printer, whether or not they are a member of an associa- tion, can apply for registration with the SGP Partnership. Initially, the program will be available to printing facilities operating in the u.s. or Canada. All types of printing processes are eligible. Only the printing operations of the facility are eligible for SGP recog- nition. Educational institutions with printing programs are also eligible, but again only the print lab is evaluated and recognized. Recognition under the program is on a facility-by-facility basis. Companies with multiple locations must seek recognition for each site separately. Within the SGP Partnership, there are two categories of recognition: . Candidate Pending Verification (CPV): A provisional status pending full conformity with the requirements for an SGP printer. . SGP Printer: The full participation level with requirements relating to sustainable business practices. A printer can initially apply for either category. The CPV cat- egory allows a facility a 12-month timeframe to meet all criteria for a SGP Printer. Facilities that meet the criteria for a SGP Printer may bypass the CPV category and apply for recognition as a SGP Printer. CANDIDATE PENDING VERIFICATION (CPV) Candidate Pending Verification (CPV) is an optional provi- sional category and a precursor to SGP Printer status. If, for some reason, a facility is unable to reach SGP Printer status within the 12-month timeframe, the facility can reapply after a six-month waiting period. CPV facilities will be acknowledged on the SGP Partnership website as candidates; however, they are prohibited from using the SGP Logo. CPV applicants must meet the follow- ing criteria. EHS Regulatory Compliance. The printer's facility-specific in-house environmental, health and safety compliance program must be current and suitable for meeting the minimal federal, state and local requirements. Printers with any significant viola- tions will not be considered for SGP Printer status. A significant violation means those violations that result in environmental damage or could cause harm to human health or the environ- ment. For health and safety, it is defined as an OSHA serious vio- lation or the equivalent for Canada. SGP Guiding Principles. The facility must also sign the appli- cation committing to several expected practices. - Sustainable FLEXO SPRING 2008 · Completely observe all laws and regulations to which the facility and its activities are required to meet. Compliance implies proactive determination and awareness of applicable laws and regulations and their appropriate dissemination and observance within the facility. Continued compliance should be actively monitored by the facility and not merely assumed. · Where feasible, use materials derived from renewable re- sources or with low environmental impact, maximizing recycling and recovery efforts, with efficient utilization of renewable energy. · Encourage the adoption of changes within the supply chain by recommending the use of raw materials that do not threaten or harm future generations. · Identify and establish a suitable means of communica- tion with interested parties such as customers, consum- ers, community groups to educate and inform them about sustainability. · Observe the principles of sustain ability which have social, environmental and economic aspects. Sustainability is a gradual process that involves continuous improvement and not a goal attainable at any point in time. Sustainability entails the fullest possible regard for the present and future welfare of the planet, its inhabitants, and for the stewardship of wealth and natural resources. All actions should be based on prudent substantiated assumptions. · Practice social responsibility by not violating pertinent em- ploYment laws and regulations and employ people without discrimination. Sustainability Policy. The applicant is also expected to develop and make available a written Sustainability Policy. This policy must be signed by a responsible party (e.g. owner, CEO, President) and made publicly available. It should set out the organization's commitment toward adoption of sustainable business practices and include: · Provision for compliance with environmental, health and safety requirements; · Commitment to continuous improvement in environmental performance, including areas not subject to regulation; · Commitment to pollution prevention that emphasizes source reduction; · Commitment to sharing information with external stakeholders. SGP PRINTER A SGP Printer is a full participation level within the SGP Partnership registration program and has substantial require- ments relating to sustainable business practices. Conformity with SGP Participant criteria will be verified by an on-site audit and is valid for a two-year period. SGP Printers will be required to sub- mit an Annual Progress Report using the official template which is housed on the program website. Applicants will be acknowledged on the SGP Partnership web- site as such. Once the application has been approved and verified, their new status will be reflected on the website. At that point, SGP Printers are permitted to use the SGP Partnership logo in www.flexomag.com
