FLEXO Magazine : Flexo Sustainable Spring 2008
Monteleone announced the launch of the SGP Partnership's Beta Test Site Program at FFTA Forum 2008 in Dallas, TX. their advertising, marketing, and, if desired by the customer, on the finished product. SGP Printers will be asked to commit to at least one continu- ous improvement project within the product, process or envelope areas. The goals will be identified with the completion of the ap- plication. Details about the sustainability activities of SGP Printers will be posted on the website to make this information transpar- ent and available to interested parties. Information will be taken from the application and proprietary aspects will be excluded. To achieve this status, the facility must meet the following criteria: . Industry Regulatory Compliance. As per CPV. . SGP Guiding Principles. As per CPV. . Management System. The candidate must establish and maintain a formal management system capable of advanc- ing the printer's commitment to sustainability. The system needs to address aspects from within the product, process and envelope categories. The SGP Partnership is not man- dating a specific type of management system, standard or protocol. A generic management system can be constructed though a basic "Plan, Do, Check, Act" (PDCA) approach, sometimes referred to as the "Deming cycle." A printer can implement manage- ment systems based on commonly available EMS models, ISO 9000/14001 or other quality management systems. Companies www.flexomag.com must demonstrate implementation of a formal management program. One required element of the system is a sustain ability com- mittee, which should include environmental, health and safety segments. The company also needs to develop and make avail- able a written Sustainability Policy that sets out the organization's commitment toward adoption of sustainable business practices. The system also requires the firm to identify goals and define procedures to achieve and maintain compliance, meet perfor- mance objectives, communicate relevant information about the management system to appropriate stakeholders and document key management system elements. Best Practices. The facility must meet the mandatory best prac- tices listed on the SGP Partnership website. Examples are given in the sidebar on page 8. Social Aspects. The printer is expected to meet with all relevant local, state, provincial, and federal employment laws. Metrics System. The SGP Partnership Sustainability Metrics System must be used to measure and report on progress. The actual set of metrics to be used by the SGP Partnership program is under development. The metrics, once established, form the backbone of the reporting requirements. Annual Progress Report. In addition, regular progress reports are essential as the means to demonstrate the commitment to excellence. It will act as a public snapshot of activities undertaken by the SGP Printer and will be publicly available on the website. The Annual Progress Report must use the official template ele- ments supplied by the SGP Partnership. ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS Facilities that hold certifications from other programs that are well-recognized and increasingly widely-adopted in the print sec- tor will be acknowledged by the SGP Partnership. These include independent third-party programs, as well as state, provincial and federal programs.
