Q: What causes a pinhole in the center of a min dot below 8 percent down to 1 percent? A: There are a number of variables that can cause dots to print with a void in the center. To print a uniform dot, we must ensure that all variables are optimized. This includes the tape/plate package as well as ink viscosity, ink-drying rate and anilox to provide the appropriate ink film thickness. PJ Fronczkiewicz Q: Do you think that if you were to run ink with your 1 million-impression test it would have kept the plate temperature down? A: For the first few hours of the run, the ink would have helped to keep the plate cool. But depending on the type of ink (espe- cially solvent-based or UV ink), it could have caused swelling and softening of the plate over time. Without adjusting impression, this would have caused more pressure, in turn contributing to additional heat. So, in this test, the cooling benefit of the ink would probably have been negated by its subsequent effect on the plate and impression. Furthermore, the plate would also have been more susceptible to wear when swollen. For these reasons, in general, plate wear results would have been worse, had I included the influence of ink as a variable. FQC Standards Working Group Update by Danny rich There was no spring update to the Standards Working Group (SWG) due to the passing of Gary Hilliard. At the Forum in San Diego, I was asked to take the chair of the SWG. I accepted the appointment and SWG has had very little to do since that time. There were only a few standards the SWG has reviewed since the last Flexo Quality Consortium (FQC) Update. One involved a new method for determining the diameter of cylinders used on flexo presses. International Stanards Organiza- tion (ISO) 15431 was approved and has been released as a Draft International Standard. ISO 15397, Communication of Graphic Paper Properties, passed the ballot but required some minor editorial changes. We are currently waiting for that standard to issue. ISO 2846-5, the standard on the color of inks for flexographic printing, had been stalled while a replacement substrate for testing was identified. The U.S . had significant input on the type of substrate and the new variety has the appearance of a paper, but is made from biaxially extruded plastic, so it will be suitable for all forms of flexographic inks. Currently, the committee is questioning the aims proposed by the U.S. , based on our Flexographic Image Reproduction Specifica- tions and Tolerances (FIRST) requirements, as the magentas in use in Europe are much bluer than those in the U.S . We may request that the National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers survey its membership to determine if U.S . flexo magenta is too yellow. That said, the aims of ISO 12647-6 , which was approved by the Europeans and the U.S . last year, have the same hue angles as the current draft of ISO 2846-5 , so it is unclear why there are complaints about the hue of the magenta. The last meeting of the ISO was held in China in May and the next meeting will be held in October in Germany.
