Industry Indicators Folding Carton Forecast steady, significant Growth Five years of formidable gains is forecasted as packag- ing’s folding carton market segment is set to capture some $184 billion in worldwide sales by 2018. Growth is pegged at 5.1 percent annually. Driving performance is increased demand for health care, dry/frozen/chilled foods and tobacco. Smithers Pira reported those findings, as well as others, in a major new study, The Future of Folding Cartons to 2018. Three megatrends are being pegged as certain to deliver added value in the folding carton market between 2013 and 2018: • Retail-ready packs, a growing weapon in the arsenal used by merchants and consumer product companies that are striving to reduce costs, take the form of cor- rugated/microflute systems, rigid plastic and some rigid board products • Anti-counterfeit systems use in folding carton applica- tions is expected to almost double with high growth anticipated, especially in health care • Barrier coating technologies are seeing developments in water-based coatings, nano-materials, bio-polymers and antimicrobial compounds BASELINE BUSINESS Globally, cartonboard production grew by 1.3 percent in 2012 to reach a total of 42.5 million tons, valued at $37.3 billion. More than half of this volume originated from the Asia- Pacific sector. The top five producers of cartonboard consti- tuted almost 16 percent of the total volume in 2012, with the top 10 accounting for a market share greater than 25 percent. The 20 largest producers accounted for 40 percent of cartons manufactured. Total volume of converted folding carton grew by better than 1 percent to reach 47.4 million tons.
