FLEXO Magazine : September 2013
East, Africa, South America, Central America, Central Europe and Eastern Europe. That’s in contrast to the already matured markets in North America, Japan and Western Europe. Examining the growing demand for labels, the study found items such as food, beverages and health care products to be relatively unaffected by any economic downturns or lulls. And in countries and regions considered emerging or developing, label market growth is forecasted to outpace gross domestic product (GDP). Another trend noted in the report is that of sustainable la- beling, as consumers place an increased focus on their own carbon footprints. This, in turn, is leading label manufacturers to evaluate the eco-friendliness of their offerings. Some steps being taken by brand owners include: • Using biodegradable materials in packaging • Incorporating renewable materials • Emphasizing recycled plastics • Utilizing film down gauging As existing label technologies are made more efficient and new and emerging technologies are brought to mass market, costs are being driven down while efficiency is being further improved. As a side effect, additional markets are being opened for label producers. n About Smithers Pira: Established in 1930, Smithers Pira provides strategic and technical consulting, testing, intelli- gence and events to help clients gain market insights, identify opportunities, evaluate product performance and manage compliance.
