Minimize Variation With A Gauge R&R By Courtney Norris Imagine a world in which the cartons of a certain brand name cola were only sometimes the brilliant bright red we have all come to recognize. Suppose that sometimes the cartons appeared in a washed-out pinkish red and sometimes in a Halloween-style orangey-red. It’s safe to say that the cola company ’s brand identity would eventually lose some of its punch. Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) companies all over the world depend on flexographic printing to preserve their brand identities through the production of consistent packag- ing and signage materials. This consistency is contingent upon achieving as little variation as possible throughout the prepress and printing process. Variation in the flexographic printing process is inevitable. However, minimizing this variation and ensuring that data is precise and reliable is crucial to delivering quality products that preserve brand identity. There are a plethora of Measurement System Analysis (MSA) methods that can be used to ensure that said systems are adequate and consistent—enough to make any printer’s head spin. One type of MSA that is typically applicable to the flexographic printing process is Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gauge R&R). WHAt is gAuge r&r? A measurement system is made up of two things: Opera- tors and the gauge, more commonly known as the mea- surement device. There is variation in every measurement system. A Gauge R&R is used to estimate the amount of total measurement variation caused by the measurement system versus the variation from the parts being measured by the system. Repeatability is the gauge’s knack for replicating mea- surements with the same operator on the same part; in other words, it is only factoring in the ability of the device. On the other hand, reproducibility is the gauge’s knack for producing consistent measurements for different operators on the same part, determining each operator ’s skill level. When put together, repeatability and reproducibility make up precision. Precision is characterized by the overall vari- ance in the measurement system and is equal to the sum of the variance of the repeatability and reproducibility figures. Written as an equation: One important point to note is Gauge R&R does not deter- mine a gauge’s accuracy, only its consistency.
