PLANTS & PROCESSES Keeping it under control Process Control Improves Quality And Pinpoints Problems By Randy Carter Processcontrolisthepracticeofdefiningasystemof procedures, measurements and documentation to pro- duce data. An evaluation and analysis of this data can lead to procedure or equipment adjustments that maintain consistency, repeatability and a better understanding of the entire workflow. It’s quality control, but not just a check at the end of a process to assign a “pass” or “fail” grade. Instead, process control is designed to enable continuous improve- ment as data is analyzed and cause and effect is understood. The flexo industry likes to talk about process control, but not everyone is willing to commit to implementing an effective process control program. WHY Process controL? Good process control helps create an improved product and allows the printer to operate more efficiently. The earlier in the process problems are caught, the less expensive they are to correct. Looking at several different measurements in a process and analyzing combinations of measurements helps to nar- row down where in the system adjustments need to be made. Instead of guessing which element needs attention, process control allows the taking of multiple measurements of differ- ent systems and using that data to find a common denomi- nator and define the true problem.
