Fine-Tune Your Printing by barbara ruuska ST. PAUL, MN—On Monday, Sept. 30 , 33 flexographic printers and channel repre- sentatives from the upper Midwest attended the first Flexo Symposium held at the 3M Innovation Center. The event was hosted by the 3M IATD Web Processing Team. Participants learned how to fine-tune their printing through improved products leading to more opportunities. Featured speaker and technical expert Ann Michaud addressed a topic 3M knows well: the interactions of tapes on surfaces. Michaud reviewed a case history of the effects of flexo mounting tape on photopolymer plates and how this interac- tion affects print. She shared the print results of controlled press tests looking specifical- ly at the interaction of mounting tape with flat-top dot plates imaged with high-resolution hybrid screening. While low-end printing may have lost ground to electronic alternatives, the demand for high-quality printing is strong. A timely review by Jamie Eggleston, tech service specialist, offered insights into the growing demand for increased quality that has led to vast improvements in flexographic printing products, including new photopolymer plate tech- nologies. Participants learned how they can stay on the leading edge of opportunity with the help of mounting tapes, designed to help flexographic printers compete with other printing techniques which were previously the preferred choice for high-end printing. The ability to compete in new markets is great news for flexo printers, as highlighted in a business overview by global print industry expert Jerry Vogler. Pam Dorrough, a web processing sales professional, rounded out the six-hour forum by discussing ways customer service support can bring value to the printing process. 3M’s dedication to the print indus- try was evidenced further through the participation of Joe Stewart, web processing national sales manager, and Kelly Vaughan, web processing sales representative, who served as hosts and emcee of the event. Barbara Ruuska is a marketing communications supervisor at 3M. asL Print FX Wins best of best award WOODBRIDGE, ON, Canada—ASL Print FX captured the first-ever World Label Association’s “Best of the Best” award at the Global Label Awards in Brussels. The printer beat out competition from 223 entrants. FTA Member ASL marked its third year in a row as a recipient of a World Label Award in 2013. “ We are very excited and proud of the organization and our employees,” says Stacy Daly, ASL’s vice president and gen- eral manager. “ For us to win three times is such an honor.” The label that helped ASL take home the Best of the Best win was a bottle label for Rennie Estate Winery. In producing the label, Daly says the printer sought out to make something that was true to the client and resonated with the customer. “ We wanted to make a label that our customer would be proud to put on his bottle, and one that the design com- pany would feel translated the vision and brought the package to life,” he says. Daly points to a constant striving to improve, meaningful labor and material investments, and continued training of ASL’s employees as keys to the printer’s success. macdermid inc. acquired by PsP TORTOLA, BVI—Platform Acquisition Holdings Ltd. has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire MacDermid Inc. for some $1.8 billion.
