indUSTrY indICATOrS Corrugated box Forecast World Demand to reach 234 billion Square Meters by 2017 World demand for corrugated boxes will increase 4.2 percent per year and reach 234 billion square meters by 2017, according to a report from The Freedonia Group titled World Corrugated Boxes. Food and beverages will remain the leading market for corrugated boxes, accounting for 43 percent of global demand. China in particular, which surpassed the U.S. in 2011 to become the No. 1 market for corrugated boxes, will make up nearly 50 percent of the increase in worldwide demand. What’s more, expanded international trade, urbanization and industrialization “will support advances in these regions’ generally underdeveloped packaging sectors,” according to Freedonia. Their booming middle classes’ rising income levels will generate increased demand for various packaged goods, like: • Processed Foods • Beverages • Personal Care Items Growth will be tempered by already matured corrugated box industries in developed areas such as the U.S., West- ern Europe and Japan, where boxes are “essentially commodity items used in well-established markets.” Corrugated boxes will also face “stiff” competition from plastic packaging varieties, specifically shipping crates, which can be reused. Plastic crates are not without their own drawbacks, however. Freedonia notes that the environmentally friendly image enjoyed by corrugated boxes, as well as the cost associated with cleaning and returning the crates are both benefits. Corrugated boxes are a renewable resource that can be recycled. In addition, boxes have advantages compared to plastic crates—especially considering that the usage of plastic crates typically involves cleaning and return costs. World Corrugated Boxes is avail- able for purchase for $6,100 from The Freedonia Group, Inc.
