The ‘red dot award: design concept’ focuses on design concepts, ideas and visions that are new, creative and exciting. It celebrates ideas themselves – the start of the journey for all products. Each year an international jury of renowned design- ers and design experts from all over the world gathers in Singapore to review and evaluate the submitted design concepts according to criteria such as degree of innovation, functionality and usefulness. “In a time where virtually everything is technically possible, creativity is an increasingly important asset,” says Werner Aisslinger, member of the jury for 2007. He stressed that design is not just about shape, form and colours – but a product’s concept. Announced late last year, eighteen winners received the distinction of ‘red dot: best of the best’ and these were automatically nominated for the premium award – the ‘red dot: luminary’. Saab’s Aero X Concept Car, designed by GM Europe Design, won this award for its ? ghter-jet styling with an environmentally friendly heart. The red dot: future initiative, promotes the winning de- sign concepts as viable projects ripe for development via international exhibitions and direct presentations to companies in Singapore. Six companies from Singapore have committed to the red dot: future initiative as commercialisation partners: Meiban Group, Pico Art International, Gencast Design, Stikfas, Gregory Ong & Co and DesignExchange. issue twenty-three 31 Curve above Interactive DVD for the illiterate, Jana Hesselbarth, Germany, a learning program designed to build con? dence, knowledge and skills. red dot: luminary winner, Saab Aero X Concept Car, Sweden, the Saab design team looked at Saab’s history as an aircraft manufacturer and incorporated aeronautical styling and features into this concept car to predict its design direction for the future.
