FTA TODAY z - VI ... D: III :z: VI - .... III :) a. Never-Ending story... " D rive the press to its limits!"-not a bad operat- ing philosophy, provided of course that it's or- chestrated responsibly. The result: dramatically increased press uptime, acceleration of ROI timelines, emphasis on operational and quality improvements and streamlined production cycles. Capital equipment upgrades can boost creativity, promote versatility and instill an air of excitement about the future in the plant. The decision to leverage technology in pursuit of a better bottom line can be a real game changer. Not only does it bring effi- ciencies to the business, it identifies the printer/converter as an open minded, solution- oriented, modem-day business partner. It allows the print shop to call itself an "innova- tor," and that can attract some attention. In short, effective introduction of something new, be it an idea; a technology; an operating practice; or an emphasis on standards measurements and controls; can, and often does, prove a profit -fueling experience. Potential customers take notice, as they evaluate the benefits and competitive advantages that working with a particular printer/converter will bring to their busi- ness. Some may be impressed by the latest platemaking technologies and the ability to hold smaller and smaller dots in register. Others want to see high line screens that come in at 275 or better. A liner-motor driven press that facilitates faster setup may catch somebody else's eye. Unified ergonomics, built-in to a press design, can capture the imagination of others. Buzzwords, like "sustain ability," "certification," "solventless adhesives," "solventless lamination," "electron beam curing," "wet trap- ping," "print fidelity," "conductive inks," "printed electronics," "smart packaging," "non-operator dependent presses," will inspire others to act. What gets their interest? The real answer: visible proof that a tool or technique will make life easier and deliver desired results-both economically and quickly. "Automated workflow," "Lean Manufacturing," "Total Production Management," "Green Printing" ... people are clamoring to get aboard those bandwagons. We've seen and heard the desire expressed at Forum/INFO*FLEX, at drupa, in the build-up to Labelexpo, in the pre-show hype for SuperCorr, and in the initial ab- stracts submitted for FTA's 2008 Fall Conference: "Packaging Premedia: Navigating the Shifting Sands from Strategy to Store Shelf." UNCOMPROMISING POSITION Technical innovation is being called for, just as it's being tirelessly pursued. Few people will rest until labor savings are realized, speed to market is enhanced, and continuous improvement is engineered. When it comes to quality, they will not stand for compromise; they will, however, insist on raising the bar, boosting perfor- mance and setting new precedents that will serve to secure flexography's future. Their view: Flexo is, and rightfully should be, the print process of choice for the global packaging, printing and converting community-no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Here, here. As you flip through the pages of this issue, bear in mind that technical innovation and continuous improvement were the dual concepts that were embraced in story as- signment and selection. We went to printers, trade shops, and of course drupa exhibi- tors whose new product introductions are being credited with causing quite a buzz. THE RUNDOWN Eastern Packaging's rise from a simple extruder, to a basic print shop, to a custom manufacturing operation that was first to place an order for linear-motor driven print decks is detailed on page 52. Its emphasis is on variable speeds, staying uop and running, precision control and adaptability on the run. MWV's Center for Packaging Innovation, is charged with building enduring, stronger brands. Its focus is next generation packaging. The rationale behind its es- tablishment and explanation of its operating philosophy, appears on page 60. Autumn Graphics is steadfast in its belief that color appearance and compliance are critical. It admits to always looking for the next advantage and is currently focus- ing on thermal imaging and flat-top dots. A status report appears on page 56. Finally, the future of electron-beam curing is detailed on page 36. Considerable verbiage is given to its role in reducing energy use and VOC production through use of low-odorfhigh performance inks; as well as its contribution to enhancing resis- tance to common chemicals and environmental agents, commonly grappled with in the flexible packaging realm.
