FTA TODAY Harpers Honored at Dunwoody Dedication standing in for Ron and Katherine Harper, FTA's Joe Tuccitto (L) con- gratulates Dr. Ben Wright, president, Dunwoody College of Technology, on the dedication of the Harper Center of Graphics Technology. Following a significant investment from long-time flexographic education advocates Ron and Katherine Harper, Dunwoody College of Technology proud- ly unveiled the newly dedicated Harper Center of Graphics Technology during graduation proceedings. Students, faculty and many industry supporters were pres- ent for the event. Accepting on behalf of the Harpers was Joe Tuccitto, FTA education director and former instruc- tor at Dunwoody. Tuccitto leads TEST (Technical Education Services Team), FTA's bold new education initiative, of which Ron and Katherine Harper are founding sponsors. "About 10 years ago, Dunwoody's printing program was in a little bit of a crisis," said Dr. Ben Wright, president of Dunwoody during the dedication. "The equipment was outdated and we weren't meeting industry standards." It was at that point, that the Harpers, leading Harper Corporation of America, stepped in. "Soon, we started getting very good at flexo. The first sign that we were on the right track was in 2002 when Dunwoody was first named College of the Year. In 2003, we repeated as College of the Year, and again in 2006." He later noted that the school also took the 2008 award. "In January, Ron and Katherine Harper made a ma- jor investment in Dunwoody College of Technology," con- tinued Wright. "They have provided resources that will allow this school for the next couple of years to provide scholarships, ensure we have updated equipment, and keep our cur- riculum current. Today we dedicate the Harper Center of Graphics Technology in honor of Ron and Katherine Harper for their outstanding support of Dunwoody College of Technology." Wright called the Harpers "legendary" in the flexographic industry "for their ded- ication to education." He added, "Today, 21 high schools 32 colleges in the U.S., Canada and Argentina have programs founded through the Harper's support." Ron and Katherine Harper regret- fully could not attend the dedication. "Through my time at Dunwoody I be- came very close to Ron, Katherine and the Harper family," said Tuccitto. "One thing that I can tell you about them is that they are very passionate people." He called their passion "infectious," then noted that it was strongest in three main areas of their life: their family, the flexo industry, and education. Further, Tuccitto explained that the Harpers believe strongly in the no- tion of champions. During his tenure at Dunwoody, he claimed, "I felt like I worked in a building of champions, and a department of champions. Today, Dunwoody is the champion. And all of the students are champions. "Ron asked me to tell you all, 'It has been our pleasure to work with Dunwoody College of Technology for the past 15 years in their quest for excellence in flexographic education. As many of you know, we have a passion for flexographic education, and Dunwoody has been a significant vehicle for that passion.'" "Dunwoody College of Technology, the graphic arts industry educational com- munity, and the flexographic printing industry are very fortunate to have the generous support of Ron and Katherine Harper, and the entire Harper fam- ily," commented Gary Hilliard of Hood Packaging, and current FFT A Chairman of the Board, who attended the dedica- tion. "The Harper's longstand- ing commitment and support to education has and will con- tinue to help provide the tools necessary for student develop- ment for many years to come." Speaking from his home in Charlotte, NC, Ron Harper stated, "Dr. Ben Wright has been an inspiration since we first met him several years ago. His passion for his job and for flexographic education reflects in the wonderful accomplish- ments of the school's flexo program. Flexography is indeed an integral and important part of the school's curriculum. Katherine and I are very, very proud to have our names associated with this wonderful school." Katherine added, "Ron and I were so pleased to have Joe Tuccitto represent us at the Dunwoody dedication. We have known and worked with Joe for several years during his days as instructor at Dunwoody, and we continue to work with him in his career at FTA. His enthusiasm, his commitment and his love of flexogra- phy is, in our opinion, second to none in the world." - J U L Y 2008 FLEXO www.flexography.org
