TECHNOLOGIES & TECHNIQUES JDF Drupa CIP4 Educates, Updates JDF A t drupa 2008, The International Cooperation for the Integration of the Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress (CIP4) organization held a JDF Experience pro- gram at the drupa Innovation Parco Looking for ways to stream- line production, save on labor and waste, improve throughput and connect with customers are high priorities for many printers, particularly at drupa. More than 20 CIP4-member companies exhibited the latest in JDF-enabled automation systems and soft- ware, and an estimated 40 industry experts presented in the JDF Experience Theatre in the comprehensive two-week conference- style schedule. The event included: · Daily printer-focused tutorials and introductions to JDF. · Six special one-hour case study discussion panels, featuring small and medium-sized printers and CIPPI award-winning examples of JDF implementations. · One-hour panel sessions on key topics such as "Connecting to your Customer with JDF," "Digital Print Automation" and "MIS and Print Automation." · Two, two-hour technical tutorials offering an in-depth under- standing of JD F. · International Day, which featured presentations in Spanish, Japanese, German, Portuguese, French and Polish. · An exclusive session on "The Future of JDF" with CIP4 leadership. · More than 100 educational presentations on JDF systems, practical implementation advice, print automation integra- tion, case studies and more. Twenty-three distinct JDF workflow automation demonstrations illustrated live jobs moving through all stages of production, from creation to postpress, and showed integrations of multiple products from the pool of 19 participating companies. "The print industry has clearly proven that profitable printers are those who leverage technology, and JDF-enabled automation. It is the technological advantage you should be looking at," said Mark Wilton of Kodak, and CIP4's education and marketing officer. "Fully integrated JDF workflow demonstrations and a comprehensive JDF Experience Theatre schedule were just two of the features of this must-see pa- vilion. Attendees stopped by the JDF Experience and learned about key automation technologies that will not only cost justify their trip to drupa, but also make it a truly 'profit fueling' experience." JDF 1.4 REVIEW During the event, CIP4 announced that the 1.4 edition of the JDF Specification was being released for review on June 20. The specification will be closed to further technical additions or mod- ifications for 120 days, and will be accessible to all CIP4 members for a final intellectual property review to ensure that the specifica- tion remains open and unencumbered by legal issues. Significant changes include: · The addition of automated layout and stripping, which is use- ful for variable digital printing where layout is determined during production, based upon content parameters. · New security and authentication features, which include the use of secure URLs and certificate passing, which allows JD F- automated production to be used securely on internet appli- cations, not just intranet applications, as in previous editions of the specification.
