Sadly, two days after Gary was informed of his choosing, on Feb. 23, 2013, he passed away • Ryerson University takes first place in the Internation- al Phoenix Challenge Flexo Skills Competition at the collegiate level. Its team included Mark Corrigan, Nikita Kuzmin, Olivia Parker, Jay Wong and Hannah Plavnick. Andrew Mandeville and Alex Yelton of Enka High School in Chandler, NC win at the high school level • The Rossini Scholarship is awarded to four students: Natalee Consulo, Mark MacManus and Lena Haidar of California Polytechnic State University, and Zachary Root of Western Michigan University • John Crammer is the sole recipient of the FTA President’s Award. As a strong and active member, he has used initiative and responsibility to help drive the flexo industry forward. That includes a FIRST certification for himself and a Company Certification for Best Label, where he serves as general manager. John famously took the reigns on the special work involved in printing FLEXO’s December 2012 SourceBook cover and documented the process in a video on FTA’s website • 13th Annual FTA Environmental Excellence Awards bestow top honors on Paragon Label and an honorable mention to Global Packaging SIGNATURE EVENTS • The Annual Forum brought 1,600 attendees to San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina and San Diego Convention Center from April 28 to May 1. The event was chaired by Bob Mullen and Pepper Stokes A survey of attendees revealed a strong affinity for con- tinued Forum attendance and positive marks for the 2013 installment: • 85 percent of delegates were repeat Forum goers, with most having attended 10 or more times • 15 percent were first time attendees • 88 percent rated the event “good” or better • 37 percent rated the event “excellent” Event theme “Right Here, Right Now ” presented attend- ees with discussion and answers to real world issues facing flexographers. Even though sustainability, low migration inks and ergonomics are important in daily operations, achieving optimum percentages in thesetwo initial concepts is basicfor boththe converter and its clients. Productivity and efficiency make itpossibleto offer good service while maintaining prices and market response. Within the extensive packaging sector, labelprinting/ converting should notbe treated differently. Efficiency and productivity are key elements in this market. Today, at least one press manufacturer has developed a non-traditional flexo label printing system, utilizing an entry-level central impres- sion (CI)press, developed especiallyfor small, short-run tasks, thepredominant type ofjob in this market. This CIpress for labels offers its customers a multi-purpose machine thatprovides a suitablesolution to short-run flexible packaging requirements, as well as top quality printing for plastic and/or paper labels. This printer can be set up with a conventional solvent or water-based ink system, or with UVinks. This way, all the main demands ofthelabel printing market are met. Inthelabel sector, it is normal to work with in-line and small widthmachines where job changeovers are very fast and where the additional assistance of ladders, carriagesfor han- dling heavy elements, etc. are not needed.
