6 HLF - Publication, Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Recipe for saving Fan-forced ovens use about one-third less energy than a conventional oven HOMELIVING Energy use in the kitchen can account for up to 10 per cent of the average family's power bill. But according to EnergyAustralia energy-efficiency expert Paul Myors, savings can be made by following a few simple steps during cooking. Portable cooking devices such as electric frypans, pressure cookers or microwaves generally use less energy than an oven. However, nothing beats oven-baked delights, especially in winter, so try to keep the oven door closed until the food is cooked. Fan-forced ovens use about one-third less energy than a conventional oven and they cook faster. Overall, natural gas heats faster and produces one-third of the greenhouse emissions of electricity. Gas ovens don't cook as evenly as electric ovens so a good compromise is to use a fan-forced oven with a gas cooktop. Cooking with the lid on pots retains the heat, cooking the contents faster. It's also best to use the minimum amount of water in pots and bring liquid to the boil quickly on a high setting before turning the heat down. Remember, a jug or kettle will boil water more efficiently than using the cooktop and a toaster is more efficient than using an oven grill to make toast.
