Home Living : July 15th 2008
2 HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Way to stop the rot The rot is uncovered. Drill a series of holes around the affected area and apply the anti-rot treatment. The area is now ready for painting. HOW MUCH? A two-pot mix treatment costs $25-$30 a litre. A squeezable gel costs about $25 for a 430g tube. Earls Wood Hardener is a new single- solution spray that costs $12.95 for a 250ml container and $10 for a refill. Rotting timber in window sills can often be patched and repaired easily and inexpensively, sparing the expense of replacing the affected timber. Two tell-tale signs of rotting timber are raised or bubbling paintwork and subsidence in the wood's surface. What you will need You will need a pocket knife, drill and large drill bit, chisel, sandpaper, rot treatment, spray bottle, woodfiller, putty knife and paint. Sink the knife into the rotted timber to determine the size and depth of the affected area. This will help you decide if it is worthwhile to repair the timber or replace it. If the knife goes right through the sill, depending on the width of the damaged area, it might be better to replace it entirely. Alternatively, cut a small section from the sill that can be replaced with an appropriately-sized piece of fresh timber. If the area is small enough to repair, use a chisel to cut out any loose or rotted timber. Chisel away the affected area and drill a series of holes around and on either side. These holes will also be filled with the rot treatment to create a barrier against future incursion of moisture into the area. On vertical surfaces, drill holes on a downward angle and also drill small holes into the patch area if the rot is more than 6mm deep. The treatment Lightly sand the repair area to create a smooth finish, preparing it to apply the rot treatment. Ensure the area is free of dirt, dust and grease. Apply the treatment liberally to the fresh timber base and surrounding areas by either pouring, sponging, brushing or spraying it. A spray gun is effective for squirting the treatment inside the drilled holes. Some rot treatments come in a bottle equipped with a nozzle. Allow the treatment to dry, according to manufacturer's instructions, which can be from 12 to 24 hours and can also depend on the weather. Once the area is dry, fill it. Get advice from your hardware store on the best type of woodfiller as these vary depending on whether it is for exterior or interior use, or whether a painted or natural finish is desired. Using a putty knife, apply the woodfiller to the area, filling it as flush to the original surface as possible. Take care to fill the drilled holes properly -- it might pay to pre-fill them. Wait a short time for the filler to harden slightly then fill again to ensure the filler goes as deep as possible. Again, drying time varies according to the product -- from one hour up to a few hours. Finishing touches Once everything is dry, sand the filled area using a medium grade sandpaper. Clean dust from the area, then paint.
