Home Living : July 22nd 2008
2 HLW - HOME LIVING: WEST, Tuesday, July 22, 2008 5 If there are no templates provided for fitting the strike plate, close the door against the edge of the jamb and mark the location of the latch bolt. Measure the distance from the flat side of the bolt to the adjacent face of the door and transfer this measurement to the jamb lining, then mark the vertical line parallel to the edge. HOW MUCH Sharp pencil 50c; ruler (or measuring tape) $5-$15; builder's square $5-$8; power drill and drill bits $80-$240; claw hammer $15-$20; chisels $5-$12; screwdrivers $10-$15; latch set $20-$60. Install knobs and latches 1 Mark on the door face the position of the centre hole for the handle and knob spindle. On the edge of the door, mark the position of the centre hole for the latch. Drill the correct-sized hole. The size will be listed in the instructions for the latch set. Drill from both sides to avoid timber damage. 2 Select a spade drill bit to suit the diameter of the latch and not wider than the face plate. Drill the hole for the latch. Push the latch into the hole, mark the outline of the face plate. 3 To create a recess for the face plate, use a hammer and chisel of the same width (or less) to make a series of cuts across the grain about 5mm apart, within the marked area. Check the depth of the recess by trying the latch in the hole. 4 Fit the latch into the door and attach its face plate using the screws supplied. Fit the handles or knobs and check that the latch works as it should. Screw the handles or knobs into place, making sure they are aligned. 6 Chisel out a shallow housing to fit the plate flush against the jamb lining. Mark the position for the latch hole nd drill or chisel to the required depth. Screw the strike plate into place, making sure the door edge is flush with the jamb edge. A latch set consists of a tabular latch, a bolt, a strike plate and keeper, and a pair of knobs or handles. Some of the sets come with instructions showing where and how to drill the holes. Others have paper templates that eliminate the need for measuring and marking.
