2 HLF - Publication, Tuesday, July 29, 2008 HOW MUCH? Screwdriver ($10 - $15) or cordless drill with screwdriver bits ($80 - $240); claw hammer ($15 - $20); chisel ($5 - $12); timber wedge (offcuts so no cost); timber to fill holes (offcuts); wood glue ($2 to $8). Secure loose hinges, doors 1 Before doing anything, wedge a piece of timber under the door to hold it level and hold its weight. If this is not done when the screws are removed the pressure on the remaining screws and hinges will cause more damage. 2 Unscrew the loose hinges. If both hinges are loose, totally remove the door and complete the steps below for both sets of hinges. 3 Use a chisel to split a piece of timber just a little wider than the screw holes for the hinge, then taper one end until it is circular -- or there- about. 4 Place a small amount of wood glue into the screw hole, then hammer in the wedge until it is tight. Cut it off flush using a hammer or chisel and allow the glue to dry. 6 Select a drill bit to suit the size of the screw thread (between 1mm and 1.5mm less in diameter than the widest part of the screw). Drill all the holes, then push the hinge into the recess and fix the screws. Do not over tighten the screws or you will strip the timber around the thread, again. 5 Lightly sand the repaired area to make it smoother. We have received many inquiries about loose and worn hinges and wobbly, dropped doors. Tightening the existing screws does not always end in a satisfactory solution so a more permanent remedy is required.
