2 HLF - Publication, Tuesday, August 5, 2008 HOW MUCH Pencil 50c; candle 50c; sandpaper $1-$2 a sheet; wood plane $20-$30; paintbrush $2-$4; touch-up paint $2-$4 for a sample pot; builder's square $8-$12. Fix a sticky situation 1 Identify the point at which the door is sticking and lightly mark this area with a pencil. 2Rubwax--a candle is fine -- along the edge of the door at the sticking point. Use clear wax so no colour is transferred. If the wax doesn't help to ease the doors movement, move onto the next step. 3 Sand the side of the door at the sticking point. As you go, open and close the door several times to check your progress. 4 If the door is still sticking, you will need to plane down a section of wood. Set the plane so that only a small amount of the surface is shaved off at a time. Proceed slowly, testing as you go how easily the door opens and closes. Remember, when deciding the door fits properly, that its edge will need to be repainted or sealed. 6 Repaint or reseal the edge of the door. Allow it to dry before closing the door. 5 Sand the planed area until it is smooth. Doors that stick can be annoying, but once the problem area has been identified, fixing it can be relatively easy. Sometimes changes in the weather can cause expansion and contraction in the timber.
