FLEXO Magazine : March 2014
EUROPE Undoubtedly, the prevailing economic situation across much of Europe has impacted label market growth, which stood at just 1 percent in 2012. Outside the food and beverage segments, poor consumer confidence has slowed demand for products that require labels—cars, white goods, consumer durables. Even within the food and beverage segments there are trends toward lower priced goods and away from pre packaged meals, and there is a decline in demand for beers, sodas and mineral waters. Regulation and legislation remain a component of label technologies in Europe against a raft of European Union directives and initiatives. LOOKING AT LABEL FORMATS Pressure sensitive and glue applied labels remain the dom- inant label formats today, with almost equal shares, totaling around 77 percent of global label volumes. In this context, glue applied labels include both cold (wet) glue labels—typ- ically the beer bottle label format—and wraparound film labels—typically found on large polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles of sodas and PET bottles of mineral waters. Sleeve labels in total account for some 16 percent of total global label volumes. They consist of: • Heat shrink sleeve (transverse direction, or TD) • Stretch sleeve labels • ROSO (roll on shrink on) • RFS (roll fed shrink) machine direction (MD) shrink sleeve PRESSURE SENSITIVE 38.5% Share of Global Volume 4% Annual Growth Rate Recently Experienced 4% Annual Growth Rate Forecasted Through 2018 “Strong growth in developing markets... Film outpaces paper...
