FQC STANDARDS WORKING GROUP UPDATE by Danny Rich The fall of 2013 was fairly busy for the Standards Working Group (SWG), as there were many standards being balloted and the ISO TC 130 held its Plenary Meeting in early November. MAJOR UPDATES Working Group 2 had released another ballot on ISO 18619 on black point compensation—the Adobe method—and this time the document was approved. It will now move forward in the voting process. WG-4 saw a proposal to withdraw ISO 2846-4 (ink color of screen printing inks). A quick poll was taken and both the Europe- an Gravure Association and the Gravure Association of America support withdrawing of 2846-3 and the U.S . Technical Advisory Group proposed the withdrawing of ISO 2846-5 on flexographic inks. Similarly, ISO 2834-2, the test print preparation standard specifically for preparing test prints for use in 2846-3 and 2846-5, would no longer be needed and should also be withdrawn. ISO 13655—Spectral measurement and colorimetric computations for graphic arts images is to be revised. The section on white backing is being updated to be more in line with the recommendations of the FQC study. Other minor corrections are also being added. A proposal has been made from WG-13 to add an infor- mative annex about assessing metamer- ism and the FOGRA PSD measurement plausibility test for non-paper substrates. BRIEF UPDATES • ISO 14861, Graphic technology—Require- ments for color soft proofing systems The editors of this standard accept- ed the comment from FTA and a note concerning spot colors will be added in the next ballot • ISO 15397, Graphic technology—Com- munication of graphic paper properties This standard has now been sent up to ISO HQ for publication • ISO 18619, Image technology color man- agement—Black point compensation The FQC filed a vote of “affirma- tive” on the second committee draft and this standard has been move to DIS level • ISO/DIS 15339-1 Graphic technol- ogy—Printing from digital data across multiple technologies – Part 1: Principles This passed all ballots and has been sent up to ISO HQ for publication • ISO/DIS 15339-2 Graphic technol- ogy – Printing from digital data across multiple technologies – Part 2: Characterized reference printing conditions — Continued on pg. 51 Flexo - Mastering the great juggling act...
