Home Living : August 12 2008
HLC - HOME LIVING: CENTRAL, Tuesday, August 12, 2008 1 Insulating for comfort Plastic shrouds seal off electrical fittings. HOW MUCH? Ceiling batts (type R3,5) come in bags of eight that cover 4.5sq m ($26-$30 per bag). Wall batts (R1.5) are packed in bags of 16 that cover 9sq m ($40-$45). Acoustic insulation batts (R2.5) for walls surrounding the laundry, toilet and bathroom come in bags of eight that cover 4.5sq m ($35-$40). A shroud kit, that includes the dividing cover for the transformer and down lights, costs $25-$30. Anything that reduces the loss of heat in winter and lowers the temperature in summer is worth considering. Insulation can reduce winter heat loss by up to 60 per cent and lower the temperature inside by up to 10C in summer. A 1.5m length of 150mm wide timber will be handy for kneeling on if working in the roof. Make sure the ceiling cavity is well ventilated and that you have plenty of fluids, especially on warm days, and, any electrical wiring in the walls and ceilings should sit over the top of the insulation. Allow a clearance of about 100mm to 150mm around the electrical appliances. Plastic moulds or dividers (known as shrouds) are recommended for protecting electrical items in the ceilings such as lights, transformers or ceiling fans, so that the insulation batts up to the dividers and not the electrical equipment. Ceiling insulation Step 1: Measure the space to work out how many insulation batts you require. Step 2: Keeping the batts in their packs, pass them through the manhole and carefully spread them throughout the ceiling area. Remember to step only on the ceiling joists, not on the plaster, and use the timber we referred to for kneeling. Start insulating from the most distant point from the manhole. Use an extra piece of timber (a broom stick is OK) to reach and position the batts in tight places. Step 3: The batts need to fit snugly between the parallel joists and should sit level with the top of the framing. The plaster ceiling will hold them in position. To fit smaller areas, trim the batts with a box cutter. Cover the manhole with insulation. Tip: Place double sided tape on the top of the manhole cover, then place part of the insulation batt on the cover. The double sided tape will hold the batt in place when opening and closing the manhole. Wall Insulation Step 1: Measure the wall areas to work out how many bags of batts you require. Step 2: Insulating walls in an established home is a specialist job for an experienced tradesperson. If building or extending, insulation can be relatively easy, because the timber wall frames are exposed. Insulation can be fitted within the timber frame cavities, but remember to maintain the required spaces away from electrical outlets, light switches and all wiring. Step 3: Do not miss insulating areas above doors and around the windows. They are usually small spaces and require plenty of measuring and cutting of batts to fill them. It is worth using expandable foam filler for the smaller and remaining gaps around the doors, window frames. Switch boxes, electrical outlets and openings around pipes.
