• Small Stops & Reduced Speed These two loss types, according to Vorne, are the most difficult to monitor and record. Instrumental in pinpointing these losses is Cycle Time Analysis, or the time it takes to produce one unit. Automating this analysis is preferred, as it often is a short amount of time and manual recording would only slow things further. Vorne writes that by comparing every cycle to the pre- determined Ideal Cycle Time and filtering data through a Small Stop Threshold---the point between what is considered a reduced speed cycle and a small stop--- and Reduced Speed Threshold---the point between what is considered a standard cycle and a slower cycle---any errant cycles can be automatically categorized for anal- ysis. • Startup Rejects & Production Rejects Any rejected product is clearly a loss. The reason for separating out startup rejects and production rejects is their causes are intrinsically different: Startup rejects stem from warming up periods and occur early in a production cycle.
