FLEXO Magazine : May 2014
Irving: This initiative has impacted our business in a positive way. Our employees are engaged and our customers have become aware of the efforts being made to spread and share common knowledge that directly impacts our packaging quality. Feedback from the customers has been positive. FLEXO®: From a plant manager 's perspective, what does having a floor of certified employees do to things like work- flow and efficiency? Irving: Although we haven't quite completed our FIRST Certi- fication journey, we have been able to align the floor employ- ees with a common goal and knowledge of the program. The proper use of terminology and an understanding of the theory of flexography help in troubleshooting problems, as well as uncovering different approaches to challenging projects. ON COMMUNITIES "We strongly support the social, cultural and economic well being of the communities where we reside. We seek to enhance their quality of life through jobs, service, the energy and good will of our employees and projects funded by our Master Foundation." FLEXO®: How did employees respond to the certification program? Irving: An immediate benefit of initiating the FIRST Certifica- tion program at Master Packaging was employee engage- ment. Our employees are motivated by the opportunity to further their knowledge and experience. FIRST Certification has provided this continuous learning opportunity. The FIRST Certification program has provided everyone in our organization with a certain level of understanding of our processes; whether it is the press operator with Level 3 or our administrative receptionist with Level 1. FLEXO®: Where do the benefits of FIRST Certification appear in day to day operations? Irving: Employees have become more engaged in our pro- cesses just by the fact that FIRST Certification is discussed on a regular basis. Discovering and applying the principles of FIRST allows the employee at each level to compare his or her day to day approaches to that of FIRST during the learn- ing process. FLEXO®: What would you say to another company on the fence about pursuing FIRST Certification? Irving: I would communicate that FIRST Certification involves hard work and commitment for the entire team. This is neces- sary before going forward. If a company is seeking to further develop its employees' skills and expertise while having a need to standardize its processes and workflows to world class stan- dards, then FIRST Certification is the route to take.
