6 HLF - Publication, Tuesday, August 19, 2008 HOMELIVING Get a wriggle on An ecologically friendly worm farm made by Australian plastic design innovator and manufacturer Reln will get you recycling. The Can-O-Worms was a feature on Oprah Winfrey earlier this year. The ecologically friendly worm farm makes it easy for people to compost. It comprises a base and three working trays made from 100 per cent post- consumer recycled plastic and converts food waste into nutrient-rich, 100 per cent organic fertiliser loved by potted plants, gardens and vegetables. The bottom tray is a collector that has a solid base and tap. Liquid drains through the upper trays into the collector tray where it can be tapped and used as a liquid fertiliser. The worms are started off in the first of three working trays by means of the bedding block provided with the kit. They then simply eat their way up, wriggling into the working tray above when they can detect food scraps placed there. By the time the top working tray is full, most worms have left the original working tray where they began which had the bedding block. Users can now take out this tray, remove the castings and then return it to the top again. ''These boxes have lots of advantages: they're cheap, lightweight, insulated and can be lined up side by side to keep each other moist and cool,'' she said. ''Before you start, check to make sure the styrofoam box has holes for drainage. Some don't, and they'll need to have holes poked through their bases so that excess water can get away. ''On the other hand, if the existing holes are large it can be helpful to put some shadecloth or mesh over the bottom of the box so that the mix won't wash through at watering time. ''Remember that good drainage is essential: vegies won't grow in soggy soil.'' Fill the box with a quality potting mix, because these boxes are relatively shallow, it's best to add some Waterwise Water Storing Granules to the potting mix before planting. What to plant? ''Salad greens do particularly well in containers. Choose smaller-growing lettuce varieties like mignonette. Mix these with rocket, spinach and red- coloured radicchio.'' Baby carrots are small enough to grow in a styrofoam box and spring onions and herbs will all do well. Nasturtiums will repel some insect pests, and both the flowers and leaves are edible. ................................................. Is mould & mildew taking over? DON'T RETILE REGROUT!
