2 HLF - Publication, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 HOMELIVING RENOBROTHERS Renovation experts Matt and Simon Judkins show you the way to make DIY easier Gate turnaround In our project we were able to use existing materials except for two gate hinges (about $2.45 each) and a pack of rivets (from $3.50 to $8, depending on size and packet quantity). HOW MUCH? Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Finished There are two main reasons you may need to change the way a gate swings. The aesthetics of the area may need to be altered, or a change in the way the gate actually operates may be required. Materials used: Rivets, hinges, safety glasses, angle grinder, tape measure, galvanised screws, power drill and screwdriver. Step One The gate needs to be removed from its hinges and its hinges removed. The latch and hook need to be taken off the gate and frame. Step Two In this case, part of the hinge is welded to the metal gate frame. This has to be removed using an angle grinder. Wear safety goggles. Step Three Hold the gate in its new position to check height and location of the hinges. You may have noticed our gate had a timber plinth across the bottom of it. This was fixed into place because there was a gap between the base of the gate's pickets and the ground -- the gap was big enough for a small pet to go through. Part of our repositioning process includes slightly lowering the gate. Step Four Mark the required position of the hinges and using these as a guide, drill holes into the metal frame using a power drill and a metal drill bit. Before drilling, check and re-check the position of the hinges. Step Five In this instance we had to rivet the hinges into place in the metal frame. In a timber frame the hinges could be screwed into place. Before riveting, check and re- check the position because it is seriously difficult to make changes once riveted. Step Six Hold the gate into position, mark the hinges' locations and screw them into position. Use a power drill and galvanised screws. Step Seven Mark and reposition the gate latch, this time on the opposite side to its original place. You will be able to use the existing gate latch, hook and screw set if they are not damaged. Step Eight Rivet the gate hook into position on the gate frame. It's now finished.
