HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, September 2, 2008 9 Getting in the swim of things Write to Ask The Experts about individual problems in the home. Email firstname.lastname@example.org with your question or fax Ask The Experts 9689 5399. HOMELIVING ASK THE EXPERTS » ADVERTISING FEATURE Jasper Wills wants a swimming pool in his back yard and needs advice on where to put it. Sunrise Pools' owner Peter Moore says this is one of the main questions asked by prospective pool-owners. ''The ideal spot is to be able to look out upon it from the kitchen or from any of the main living areas,'' he said. ''A pool these days is more of a water feature than ever before.'' What about water and restrictions? A permit to fill the pool has to be obtained to allow the pool to be filled from household tap water and the cost varies depending on the size of the pool. An average cost is about $80. Sydney Water gives the permit and the occupants then have to save water in the home through, for instance, dual-flush toilets and AAA showerheads. What is the average water capacity of pools? Most pools hold between 30,000 and 70,000 litres. People with pools 40,000 litres and up need to install water tanks to catch rain to top-up the pool, as well as pool covers. We would like to extend the swimming season by having the pool heated, what is the best option? Solar heating is one of the most effective heating options, it really depends on the aspect of the house to ensure the sun heats the solar panels. There are other options of gas and electric heating. It really depends on the clients' requirements and being environmentally friendly. Pool covers are mandatory to stop evaporation; they also serve other purposes including keeping the pool warm and reducing running costs. What about fencing? Under the Swimming Pools Act, an isolation fence must be placed around pools. There are some exceptions, but in most cases they have to be fenced from the residence. I don't want to spend time vacuuming leaves out of the pool, what are my options? There are many automatic cleaners, including a suction type that runs off the filtration system. The pressure cleaners have their own pump, while an automatic in-floor cleaning system could also be considered. What about sanitisation? The main two are chlorine and salt there are other systems available and are purpose-designed for each application.
