Home Living : September 9 2008
HLF - Publication, Tuesday, September 9, 2008 7 Chilling discovery at home The fridge is often the hub of the family home, an essential part of every kitchen. But how you use your fridge could be pushing up your electricity bills and greenhouse gas emissions, says Paul Myors energy efficiency expert for EnergyAustralia. ''A recent survey found more than 20 per cent of people leave the fridge door open while unloading their shopping. And 28 per cent of people under 30 leave the fridge door open while making a sandwich or breakfast,'' he said. ''By leaving the fridge door open more than necessary, you are letting the cool air out and making the fridge work harder to replace it.'' Simple checks on your fridge might also help you save. Check the fridge door seals with a five dollar note, the seal may need replacing if the note is not firmly held in place. Also defrost the fridge if it's not a frost-free model. If you own a second fridge that is not being used ask yourself if you really need it. An old fridge running 24 hours a day, seven days a week could be adding up to $220 to your energy bill every year and 1.5 tonnes of Co2 emissions. And if that is not incentive enough, the NSW Government's new Fridge Buyback scheme will pay up to $35 to get rid of your fridge if it's more than 10 years old and larger than 250 litres. For more information visit: www.fridgebuyback.com.au If you are buying a new fridge, check the star rating label. A new high star fridge can cost as little as $70 a year to run. Seeing red Western red cedar is uniquely suited for use in outdoor structures When the warm weather arrives, what better way to enjoy it than outdoors? Decks can be built in all sorts of shapes and sizes and with various materials. However they are traditionally made from timber, a trend that continues to be popular as it complements the outdoor surroundings and is the most environmentally-sustainable building material available. Western red cedar is an ideal decking material for those that want a timber that is beautiful, environmentally sustainable and durable. The use of western red cedar for decks is common in North America and Europe, specifically the UK and Ireland. Western red cedar is suited for use in outdoor structures as it contains natural preservatives which resist both termite and moisture damage. A deck must be functional and suit your living style, back yard or courtyard and, of course, the budget. A ground-level deck provides the simplest way of expanding living space outdoors. These are particularly effective in transforming a concrete courtyard into an inviting outdoor living area or providing a usable outdoor space over damp, rocky or uneven terrain. Even very small areas can be made into attractive and practical decks.
