FLEXO Magazine : July 2014
individual label had spot silver and CMYK. In addition, each of the four labels was a different SKU and had two unique metallic colors found only on that SKU. Finally, each label contained a metallic purple, and two more unique metallic colors were used on each SKU. The labels also included various special effects, including a vignette of one metallic color into another, watermarking and metallic colors that transition from light to dark. These special effects provide visual flourishes and deter possible coun- terfeiting of the finished labels (See Image 1 and Image 2). The job was designed using the Color-Logic Design Suite—a simple plugin for conventional design programs, such as InDesign and Illus- trator. Using the software, the designer was able to create the four SKUs with all of the many metallic colors and special effects in a single ganged press- run, rather than the four pressruns ordinarily required. Moreover, all four SKUs were produced simultaneously using only five inks: CMYK and silver. Produced conventionally, each SKU would have required a separate pressrun of 11 colors plus one additional plate to add the special effect in each SKU. By planning the entire job at the design stage, Model Graphics eliminated three pressruns, together with the related makeread- ies, wash ups, startup substrate waste and postpress finishing. Benefits & Savings Here is a brief outline of specific sav- ings demonstrated by the project: • Design Time The software saved Model Graphics many hours of expensive designer time. It auto- matically created the metallic ink plate with just a few clicks of the designer’s mouse. If the printing is to be done on a metallic Image 1. Four metallic SKU labels Image 2.
