HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, September 23, 2008 5 Coffee equipment » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING If you dream of home coffee that doesn't involve a kettle and jar of granules, the Ascaso's Dream series of domestic coffee machines is well worth a look. Ascaso, a Spanish company, has transformed the once-simple domestic coffee machine into an innovative design masterpiece. The Dream series allows you to brew and froth simultaneously. The growing popularity of the espresso in Spain and the rest of Europe in the 1950s led to a flourishing industry. Working on a production line, making espresso parts for consumer espresso machines, Jesus Ascaso acquired the passion and knowledge that led him to start his own business in 1962. From these humble beginnings, when Mr Ascaso used to call on cafes with a suitcase full of gaskets and filters, Ascaso has become a leader for quality coffee machines. Available in red and matt black as well as a polished aluminium finish, the Dream coffee machine's features include brass group, a powerful steam/ hot-water tap, easy-clean tray and cup- warming top. The home connoisseur can confidently and easily brew a strong short-black or a skim-milk decaf cappuccino to coffee shop standards. RRP start from $889 for the red and matt black finish, and $1045 for polished aluminium. Details: Visit www.ascaso.com It's spring, so prune the power Spring is in the air and that means it's time to pack up those heaters. Energy consumption tends to be lower at this time of year because we don't need to heat and cool so much, thanks to milder temperatures, EnergyAustralia energy-efficiency expert Paul Myors says. ''So that means lower bills and greenhouse emissions,'' he said. ''It's also a good time to do a bit of spring-cleaning around some of your appliances, to help them run more efficiently and cut your electricity costs.'' Clean lint-filters on dryers, and clean or replace air-filters on airconditioners according to manufacturers' recommendations. An airconditioner with a dirty air filter will have to work harder to cool your room. Fixing leaky taps saves water, but remember that a leaky hot-water tap can also waste a lot of energy. In fact, each leaking hot-water tap could add over $10 per year to your energy bill. A fridge should have at least an 80mm gap at the back and sides so it can lose heat efficiently from the rear coils. This can reduce running costs by about 15 per cent or up to $20 a year. Finally, do a walk around and switch off any appliances that are not being used, preferably at the power point.
