HOMELIVING » ADVERTISING FEATURE ASK THE EXPERTS Rob Swinton is ready to paint and wants to know if he can use water-based paint over the solvent-based enamel paint that was previously used on doors, skirting boards and windows. Ducolor owner manager Tony Montebello says there are some brilliant products to cut the time and effort of painting and to ensure a great finish. ''A water-based primer undercoat like Taubmans 3 in 1 can be used over solvent-based paint as long as the base is solid,'' he said. ''Give the area a light sand, then you can follow with a water-based finish. A paint like Taubmans water-based enamel is ideal here. Most people prefer to use water-based paints as they don't have a lasting smell and brushes wash-up in water.'' We have a small amount of slate at the front door and it is scuffed. Can this be rejuvenated? In such a high-traffic area the solvent-based sealer wears, but it is an easy matter to recoat it. Apply the sealer with a lambswool roller. What do you recommend for walls? Walls should be a washable surface and I would recommend a low sheen for walls in good condition. For walls in a not-so-good condition use a flat finish as a flat paint doesn't show imperfections so much. A flat paint can be wiped and is not a scrubbable finish like the low sheen. Should we just paint all rooms the one colour throughout? The trend is to paint in neutral tones throughout and give one wall in larger rooms a textured feature-finish like suede or Murowash. I'm not very experienced with painting and the textured finish sounds difficult. Is it? The effect is a crisscross applied with a brush for an uneven patten. Experienced painters can roller the wall then brush in a crows feet design in a crisscross action, but novices should use a brush for both coats. What should we use in the bathroom? There is some mildew on the ceiling. Ceiling mould or mildew, if not peeling, can be treated with Selley's rapid mould killer, spray it on and it kills the mildew, ready to paint. Damp areas should be painted with a mould-resistant paint. Should we buy cheap brushes and rollers and throw them out after a day of painting? It is important to get quality tools for a quality finish. Generally it is recommended to use polyester or lambswool rollers for broadwall areas of ceilings and walls, then sponge or mohair for trim work mainly for enamel paints. The hair on a sponge and mohair is shorter for for lighter paint jobs so the paint doesn't run. If I am a bit time-strapped, can you recommend any painters if I should decide to go that way? We have a referral system if people don't want to paint. We give them the names of painters and it is up to them to decide who they employ. Mr Montebello is also a colour consultant and studied at the School of Colour and Design. A big part of Ducolor is helping people with colour. Staff generally get a sense of when someone is finding it hard to make a decision, so there is a checklist to make colour selection easier for them. There is a huge range. We carry all brands and have ample staff to ensure people can get help. One of the biggest mistakes can be choosing the wrong colour, so we have sample pots that should be applied using the entire contents to get a better idea of how the finished surface will look.
