Expat Investor : October 2008
HEALTHCARE Guide to researching plans BUPA International’s cover for new EU countries development consultant, tells Expat Investor, “Because the plan is focused on European coverage, medical costs and premiums are more affordable. Cover starts from just €507 per person per year.” Bupa International’s latest statistics People living and working in new EU countries, such as Bulgaria and Romania, can now access international private medical insurance tailored to their needs, thanks to a new product from Bupa International. The European Health Plan provides people living in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia with access to treatment in hospitals or clinics anywhere in Europe. It also includes cover for chronic diseases, such as diabetes, worldwide emergency travel and the facility to add dental and optical cover. In addition, European Health Plan customers have access to Bupa International’s 24-hour worldwide medical assistance helpline, which is open 365 days a year and is manned by a team of experienced advisers who, between them, speak 34 languages. Steven Martin, European shows the top procedures undertaken by expats in Europe were diagnostic tests – such as colonoscopies and gastrocopies – which is a sign that these tests are becoming more mainstream. “This can only be a good thing – after all the sooner health problems are diagnosed, the better the chance of someone being treated successfully,” adds Mr Martin. Bupa International also recently announced that it now provides cover not just for the diagnosis of chronic diseases but also to control them. ? Take time to read up about the general issues around health and medical insurance and the types of cover available. ? Check out the extent of health and medical insurance offered by an employer. Be aware of which benefits are not included in a company plan. Select from policies which allow top-up cover on those benefits you need. ? Always compare several policies to appreciate what is omitted by some providers and included in others. Remember no glossy brochure will advertise benefits which are not included. ? Only compare like with like when assessing premiums. For example, same geographical zones, same age bands, same lists of benefits and same inclusion of other family members. ? Select policies which seem most suited to your circumstances. If you know you will never need maternity cover or complementary therapies ignore this element. Equally, don’t push aside key benefits such as emergency evacuation and dentistry – such inclusions are often what insurance cover is all about. ? If you have a pre-existing condition, be honest and own up to it. It would be foolish to write off your policy rights just when you need the cover most. ? Be careful not to restrict the breadth of health cover when it comes to other parts of the world you may travel to. Look for policies which include a certain number of days travel per year outside your normal region of residence. ? Consider whether it makes financial sense to opt for reducing the premium by accepting responsibility for excesses. Sometimes this option can provide considerable savings.
