FTA Members Involved in Mergers, Acquisitions in 2014 CHICAGO, IL—Mergers and acquisitions continue to be occurring with regular f requency in the packaging market, and FTA members are among those joining forces. “The dominant trend is the resurgence of private equity buyers,” notes Mesirow Financial Investment Banking, in its Mid-Year Review report. As compiled by Mesirow, the 10 largest transactions this year, as well as a handful of notable exchanges, include a number of member compa- nies, including RockTenn, Berry Plastics Group, Hood Packaging, Bemis Company and more. “The lists underscore the vibrancy of the packaging industry and the range of strategic options available to packaging business owners,” Mesirow says. Corrugated Consolidation CHICAGO, IL—Despite being affected by the recent recession, the U.S. corrugated industry is thriving, thanks largely to a period of intense mergers and acquisitions. “ The size and scope of the industry transformation is quite impressive and worth noting,” writes Mesirow Financial Investment Banking in its recent Mid-Year Review report. As Chart 1 illustrates, U.S . box shipments dropped dramatically from 2006 to 2009 and have made a modest comeback in the years since. In an effort to capture more market share, a number of companies began acquiring and merging with each other. The results of that are seen in Chart 2. Mesirow outlines some of the benefits of these unifications: • High cost mills were shut down • Production volume was opti- mized across a larger plant network • Pricing discipline was strengthened The companies have benefitted, and their shareholders have as well, as many of the recently unified have post strong price growth since 2007.
