FLEXO Magazine : August 2014
Putting New Ideas to Work C o chairs PJ Fronczkiewicz, product manager, Flint Group Flexographic Products and Bill Malm, regional sales manager, Flexo Wash LLC, will helm Flexographic Technical Association's 2014 Fall Con- ference, set for Oct. 20--22 in Minneapolis, MN. Here, the two men brief FLEXO® on the development of the agenda, the t of the city, Tabletop Exhibit and theme, and speak to the highlights and takeaways that all dele- gates will appreciate. ey promise the focus will be on tangible, real world results as great ideas and their day to day impact on exography are examined in depth. FLEXO: Let's start by addressing the idea behind the theme: "Beyond the Concept: Innovation in Action." Where did it come from? What does it mean to you? How has it inspired development of the di erent Fall Conference 2014 sessions? FRONCZKIEWICZ & MALM: e theme for this year's conference was inspired by a few career commonalities and personality traits that we discovered we share as we rst came together and started brainstorming about what would consti- tute our "ultimate" Fall Conference. With largely technical backgrounds, we've both spent a lot of time involved with the practical side of prepress and printing---on the pressroom oor, in the plate room, etc.---trying to make new technologies work and getting to experience the various trials and tribulations that come with the territory. While we love and embrace the innovative process and new commer- cial o erings, we tend to be anti u , "prove it to me" realists when it comes to evaluating their e ectiveness. Hence, we wanted to see a Fall Conference where the focus was less on what an innovation "could" do in theory and more on what the innovation "has" done in reality. Hopefully, exographers will nd value in hearing how others in the industry are putting new ideas to work. FLEXO: FTA is describing presenters as "talented speakers" with "revo- lutionary approaches." Can you ll us in on exactly who will be speaking and what topics each presenter will address? FRONCZKIEWICZ & MALM: We have an all star lineup this year. A conference involving innovation wouldn't be complete without discussing the innovative process of one of---if not "the"---global au- thorities on the subject, Minneapolis' own 3M. e keynote presenta- tion from 3M will discuss exactly that, followed by another presenta- tion, "Winning at New Products," which will illustrate what it takes to create your own big ideas and how to drive your new innovations to market. Other presentations will include: • e world's largest plate and prepress suppliers, each accompa- nied on stage by an actual customer co presenter to discuss how their most recent innovations were implemented and how life has improved since • Clemson University's Sonoco Institute, to ll the audience in on the future of electronics printing and how exo is nding a t in this exciting technology Bill Malm PJ Fronczkiewicz 24 FLEXO | AUGUST 2014 FTA TODAY
