FLEXO Magazine : August 2014
Specification Technical Details Max Speed 2,756 fpm Web Width 17-40 to 49.96-in. Roll Diameter 39-in. Annual Output 4,960 tons Processed Materials Paper, film Industries Flexible packaging, labels, security applications, decorative printing, industrial applications, tobacco appli- cations, packaging for liquids, sack & bag production BOBST CL 850 / CL 1000 One of the hallmarks of BOBST high perfor- mance laminators is the highly sensitive web tension control system which can be main- tained at extremely low tolerances for a wide spectrum of flexible substrates with different physical properties and varying thicknesses. These can include different material combi- nations from thin aluminum foil to plastic films and paper. The multi technology lamination platform CL 850 / CL 1000 comprises duplex, du- plex tandem and triplex multi technology laminators. All feature advanced technical solutions developed to increase both product quality and machine productivity for convert- ers of flexible materials in each of the market sectors. Flexo Coating System: BOBST's flexo coating system has proven to be the highest quality application for solvent based adhe- sives. It provides a far superior optical quality of the laminated structure due to improved adhesive distribution, a lower coating weight with comparable bond strength and a wide coating range without changing the coating cylinder. Tunnel: The drying system is highly innova- tive. The use of dual technology nozzles---im- pingement and flotation types---enables opti- mum air impact on both sides of the substrate along the entire web length. Nozzles, rolls and filters are easily removed, can be cleaned offline without stopping production and can be replaced within seconds. The dryer construction provides optimum accessibility for web introduction, cleaning and maintenance. Machine Design Unparalleled Web Handling Technology: Accuracy of tension control is of paramount importance to produce high quality laminates with minimum material waste, especially when the machine can handle a wide range of flexible substrates with different physical prop- erties and varying thicknesses. This includes the ability to process and coat the adhesive directly on thin aluminum foil. Efcient, Operator Oriented Technology: The coating unit features a multi trolley system design, enabling the use of different process technologies to perform multiple applications: solvent based and water based dry lamina- tion, solventless lamination, in register cold seal coating on preprinted substrates and in register printing of one additional color. Sleeve type pressure roller with onboard sleeve change without tools. The user friendly design and advanced technical solutions provide for very fast job changeovers and full accessi- bility to all machine sections for cleaning and maintenance. 100 FLEXO | AUGUST 2014 PRESS BUYER'S GUIDE / CONVERTING EQUIPMENT addition to being able to selectively metallize inline and in register. Consumers often prefer to see the contents of the food package they are buying. This has to be balanced against the requirements of the packaging, which must protect the product, be environmentally friendly and cost effec- tive, while also being attractive. Certain food packaging materials need to have light and ultraviolet barrier to enable the food to stay fresh. Others don't and can be packaged in clear barrier films. Printing Barrier Metallizing --- Large diffusion pumps mean very high vacuum levels in the coating zone. This leads to high barrier coatings which have a good market in flexible packaging of many foodstuffs. Coating Metallizing --- BOBST's optical monitoring system allows the metallizer to apply a uniform layer of aluminum. This maximizes the func- tionality of the coating and reduces the cost of production, by ensuring that the optimum amount is used. Plasma Treating --- The proprietary plasma treater increases the reflectivity of the coating, increases metal adhesion and improves barrier levels against water vapor and oxygen transmission. Winding Output Rolls --- The winding system, with its high speed rollers and precision parallelity, has an industry renowned ability to produce rewind rolls that are the image or better of the unwind rolls. The Optional BOBST General Registron HAWKEYE is a monitoring system that at full metallizer speed detects, counts and catego- rizes pinholes and other defects from 0.1-mm. upwards. This allows process control that brings increases in speed and final product quality. This product can also be used during the AlOx process to allow greater precision control and quality assurance.
