PLANTS & PROCESSES Passing The TEST Master Packaging, Inc. Earns Leadership Award for FIRST Focus After attending 2012 Forum, Mary Jean Irving, president and chief executive officer, Master Packaging, Inc. , be- came aware of the Flexographic Image Reproduction Specifications & Tolerances (FIRST) Certification program. Her company immediately began exploring how FIRST works, the various certification levels and how to enroll employees. Two years later, Master Packaging has more than 350 Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 certifications among its workers and another 116 certifications currently underway. “ T he FIRST Certification pro- gram provided an opportunity for us to increase our knowledge and expertise while implementing world class standardized processes and workflows in our plants,” she says. One of the things Irving and Master Packaging learned early on was that “companies do things differently from one anoth- er. ” She says the FIRST Certification program, “provided an opportunity for us to increase our knowledge and expertise. ” In recognition of the work that Irving and her team have ac- complished in their pursuit of adhering to industry standards and becoming a more efficient company, Master Packaging has been honored with the 2014 TEST (FTA’s Technical Educa- tion Services Team) Educational Leadership Award. Here, the company ’s president and CEO discusses winning the award, the benefits of adhering to FIRST standards and how certifica- tion has changed her company. FLEXO®: How does it feel to be awarded the TEST Education- al Leadership Award? Mary-Jean Irving: We are very honoured to be awarded the TEST Educational Leadership Award. We recognize that em- ployee education and training is vital for Master Packaging, as we are an independent packaging manufacturer located in Eastern Canada. Because of our location, we are far from what would be considered the manufacturing hub of Canada; therefore, employee training in our processes and industries is instrumental to our success. It is exciting to be recognized for our efforts. FLEXO®: Talk a bit about the company ’s history. When did Master Packaging get started? Irving: Master Packaging was founded in 1996 with the con- struction of a corrugated sheet processing plant in Borden, Prince Edward Island (PEI). Within two years, corrugated volume increased to support the construction of a state of the art corrugating plant in Dieppe, New Brunswick. In 2004, we established a green field state of the art manufacturing facility for folding carton in Borden, PEI.
